In the hills outside Florence, tanneries have operated for centuries — some since the Renaissance. The leather that eventually wraps our Lounge Chair begins as raw hides, vegetable-tanned using bark and chestnut extracts rather than harsh chromium chemicals. The process takes 40 days, not 40 minutes.
Each hide is hand-selected for uniformity and character. Our tanners look for a balance of natural grain and softness — leather that will develop a rich patina rather than crack or peel. The result is a material that genuinely improves with age, gaining depth and warmth that synthetic alternatives can only imitate.
Back in our workshop, the leather is cut by hand, matched across panels for consistent color, and stitched with waxed linen thread. The frame beneath is solid hardwood, joined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery that has stood the test of centuries.
